in the united states. timothy dolan. good clorng to you, claudio. >>. >> reporter: good morning, matt. there's only one where a pope resigned in the past. we have to go to the 24th century, and that didn't go so well with the public sentiment. that resignation is still known as the great refusal. and guess what, it was even featured in the divine comedy. that didn't go down so well. well, this time, it looks like the reaction is a bit more positive to the announcement of the resignation. a number of cardinals have reacted to it, saying they received this information, an announcement in disbelief, but they admire his courage. he does say courage to step down as the leader of the 1.2 million catholics around the world, matt. >> it's the middle of the afternoon, claudio, there in vatican city.

s it he a place where tourists and pilgrims gather on a daily bases. any idea the reaction of the people among the street or in the plaza? >> reporter: oh, yeah. we spoke to a number of people here. they saw all of the cameras charging over them. they were there to visit st. peter's square on a quiet monday morning as the tourists do here. they asked us what is going on. nobody really got the news. when they told them pope benedict xvi was redesignisignry didn't know. actually, he can, but obviously, no pope has done that for 700 years. so no wonder people are aware of that. for now on that may change the course of the catholic church in the future as well as pope benedict xvi is setting an example. if you don't have the strength to carry on let someone younger and more strength to carry on the mission.

>> it certainly is a monument ool announcement. claudio, thank you very much. this morning we spoke with greg burke the senior communication adviser to the holy see in rome. we began by asking him how much of a surprise this was? >> it is a surprise. i people think had fair warning. it was a few years ago in a book called "light of the world," a long interview with a german journalist. the journalist asked the pope if he would resign. and he said something interesting. in the midst of a candle and all that stuff. he said now is not the time. it's not the time to run when you're in great risk and emergency period. but he said i do believe there are times when a pope, if he doesn't have the strength, can and even should resign. so we did have fair warning. but at the same time, since it is something that hasn't happened in centuries, it always does come as a surprise. >> and, greg, of course, it raises the natural questions

about what is going on with the pope's health as the associated press is reporting that the pope's brother said his doctor said no transatlantic trips. we've seen it this week. his gait, using a cane in resent weeks. how severe is his health? >> i don't think there's anything severe about his health. i don't want to give my dad a hard time. he's four years older than the pope. he's 90. i think about the pope i think about my dad. he's 90 years old. he's in good shape mentallile, but i think twice before i say, hey, dad, let's go to new york. something i did up until a couple years ago. and i think the pope is exactly the same way with -- you know, people seeing him, he's having a harder time walking. he started using the cane. on the other hand, just the other night, he looked very tired, but he spoke off the cuff for well over a half hour, and as the pope has done for --

shown for years, great, great intelligen intelligence. but clearly, physically, he doesn't feel -- he doesn't feel up to the job. and i think this was somewhat an act of humility to admit that. >> and before i let you go, how much advance notice did church leaders have? how much planning has there been now for this papal conclaves that will elect a new pope? >> a couple of top officials have phone for quite some time, certainly for several weeks. i was told that just this morning. i only found out a few hours before hand from the pope's chief of staff. the chief of staff had known for a few weeks now. and, you know, this -- they're used to this, i know it's huge news. but the romans, you know, one pope dies, and you elect another one. that's the old phrase here in rome. in this case, it isn't the pope dying, obviously, it's him resigning but in terms of process and conclave it all works like it does every other time.

>> that was vatican senior communication adviser greg burke earlier this morning. >> as mr. burke mentioned even for top officials in this country the announcement came as a surprise. cardinal timothy dolan, the archbishop of new york just learned the news when we called him. he rushed over this morning from st. patrick's cathedral to give us his thoughts. >> apparently it is confirmed. you and i both chuckled that this might be another rumor but it sure enough is confirmed. i find myself eager for news. i find myself itching to read the statement in latin. i hope you can translate it. >> good luck with that. >> that the holy father made and i find myself kind of somber. you know, in a way, boy, i loved this pope. every catholic feels the pope is his father. we call him our holy father. the world looks to him with respect and affection. i sense a special bond with him. i mean, he's the one that

appointed me to you all as archbishop to new york. i'm wearing the ring he gave me and the cross he gave me. so i feel a particular bond with him and i know the sadness, to be honest with you. on the other hand, my appreciation for him which was already high, is enhanced a bit. because with this sense of realism that he has such an esteem for the office of the successor of st. peter which is what the pope is, the bishop of rome, the successor of st. peter that he says, you know, i may not be up to it t now and perhaps i can best serve jesus and his church and his people by stepping aside. i have to admire him immensely. >> even as we stop and pay tribute to what he meant to the papacy and church an enormous responsibility falls on your shoulders as one of the cardinals in the world. >> yes, it does. i've never been through this before. i'm still unpacking the red socks from a year ago when i was made a cardinal. i'm going to need some coaching here. i don't exact know, except for

prayer, which i already do a bunch of, and need to do more of, except for prayer, i don't know what else to do. i'll await instructions of everybody else. >> there will be, and you help me out, and you correct me on this. there's a period of sede vicante. when the pope is dead. the chair of peter, ancient sign of teaching and unity, it will be vacant. ands cardinals pastors and parishes in rome. you came to our church in rome. our lady of guadalupe, we came together to elect a successor to st. peter. >> what are the qualities one looks for in a pope. and is there a short list, as it were? >> well, if you look, a good place to start would be look at pope benedict. there's a learning, a savviness

about the world, a thee logical depth. there's unquestionably a personal piety and holiness. there's a lynn lynn giftic challenge. >> as a cardinal can you vote for yourself? >> no, only crazy people can enter the contest. >> your eminence, it's awfully nice for you to come here this morning. >> you were one of the first people i spoke to. i promised you when this sad day would come, i'd be at your service. i look forward to being with you the coming weeks. >> as you said, there are mixed emotions. >> there are mixed emotions. i love the guy. what people don't notice is his humility. he almost shrugged and said compared to john paul ii, he said, boy, i don't know if i'm

greatest preacher in the world today. he has a remarkable capacity to express the beautiful truth of the christian faith in an accessible way. it's simplicity that comes on a far side of great complexity. this is an extraordinarily learned man as cardinal dolan said. what has struck me in the 25 years i have known the man who will return to being joseph ratzinger, is the simplicity of his soul. this is a thoroughly convinced christian believer who happens to be one of the smartest people in the world who speaks six or seven languages with complete flewency, who knows the history of biblical religion from "a" to "z." who never wanted to be an executive, a manager, who always thought of himself primarily as a scholar. but who somehow could translate all of that learning into

beautiful simplicities about god's love for the world and for god's people. >> and, george, even as we honor the service of this pope, we look forward to the election of a new pope. and tell us about this process. i mean, is this a sort of thing where, for lack of a better term, there are front-runners? >> there will be an enormous amount of ink spilled in the italian press over the next two weeks about front-runners. most of that would be silly. there are a number of cardinals who fit what would seem to me to be the profile. first of all, a man in full physical vigor. that suggests to me someone perhaps under 70. someone who w the linguistic skills to speak to the church in italian obviously, he's the bishop of rome but also in english, spanish, et cetera. i think above all, a pope who

a trail of destruction in mississippi after a powerful tornado tore through three counties. the weather channel's reynolds wolf is with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i want to show you something in hattiesburg. take a look at this church, mt. caramel baptist church which was full. of course the people left. the tornado struck in the afternoon. pan over here on this side. street and we'll show you all this damage we have right over here off main street. part of a gas station devastated. debris as far as you can see. that is part of what this tornado caused. you're seeing this video. this was shot from the storm chasers just yesterday afternoon. just a devastating tornado. this tornado about half a mile wide at its greatest intensity. we do have bad news. 50 people, over 50 in fact that are injured, that came to this part of the world. best news of all. no fatalities to report.

still got a huge cleanup and have to restore power to 5,000 customers. it will take a while to get back to normal. thank you. reynolds, thank you. a carnival cruise line is stranded in the gulf of mexico as an engine rhyme fire stopped the ship. tom is following this story out of washington, tom, good morning. >> hi, natalie. this is the carnival cruise ship "triumph." now drifting in the gulf of mexico after a fire in the engine room. it happened off the yucatan coast. the fire has left the ship without any propulsion. it reported no injuries but it is drifting, operating on emergency power. a tug boat is en route and should arrive sometime this morning.

passengers and a crew of more than 1,000 are given food and refreshments. another carnival cruise ship pulled alongside to help and coast guard cutter was dispatched as well. the plan is pull the ship to mexico where the passengers will deboard and then go on to houst houston. the passengers who booked on those next ships will be given discounted and full refounds. the passengers on this ship will give a full refund and discount on future five-day cruises, hopefully with power and propulsion. natalie back to you. fugitive former police officer, christopher dorner now has a $1 million price on his head. that reward was posted as authorities searched towns near los angeles for the fired lapd cop suspected of killing three people last week, including a police officer. we'll have much more on this

middle ages. for some that comes as quite a shock this morning. more than a million catholics waking up to this news worldwide. good morning everyone i'm sa msh guthrie along with matt lauer. >> he calls this a great decision of the church. claudio lavanga, is following this. we just saw a live shot of vatican square. are you seeing a difference in the pilgrims arriving? >> it's unusual activity in vatican square. tourists were wandering around. nobody really knew about it. i was there. everybody rushed there with cameras and were they all asking what was that all about. well, actually the pope is resigning, everybody looked shocks. well, just as shocked as we looked this morning when we got the news ourselves. where nobody really saw this coming.

although the pope, pope benedict xvi kind of hinted that if he felt that he wasn't strong enough to carry on the important tasks as the leader of the catholic church, then he will consider resigning. nobody really thought he would do that before, at least next year. because this year is the year of the faith of so there must be -- he must have felt really that his strength was leaving him all of a sudden to decide, or to take such a great grave decision. he even said it himself, that he's fully aware of the gravity of the decision that he's making but obviously, if he has taken this decision there may be major reasons behind it. >> right we're in now looking at a conclave in the early march or middle of march to choose the next pope. claudio lavanga, thank you very much. >> let's get a check of the weather, al has the latest. hey, al.

leads and average $1 million reward for christopher dorner. law enforcement says christopher dorner dumps a gun belt, a helmet. police uniform and ammunition the morning after his first two murders. police also released these pictures of dorner taken in late january. another look of an accused cop killer who remains out of sight. >> to remain targeted because you took an oath to protect others. to have your family targeted because they're related to you. that is absolutely terrifying. >> with the former cop turned fugitive accused of murdering three, today we've learned more about the last victim. an officer with two young children who survived two tours in iraq but was ambushed while on patrol here at home. >> our proper is officer michael crane. he was 34 years old, 11-year veteran of the riverside police department.

one to see osama bin laden alive. here is what he says in the interview. i shot him two times in the forehead. the second time as he was going down. he crumpled on the floor in front of his bed. i hit him again. his tongue was out. i watched him take his last breath and i remember, is this the best thing i've ever done or the worst thing i've ever done? >> think about that. this is what you've just done. you've just killed the world's most wanted terrorist and you have to consider, was this bad or was this good? the good was that he felt he was doing this for the people of new york, for the country. for the s.e.a.l.s. and the bad thing, of course, was the security issue among other things. >> he signs up for four more months and then he leaves the s.e.a.l.s four years short of his 20-year pension time. >> right. >> now this is really the gist of your article, by the way. he feels that he is fighting a completely different kind of battle? >> yes. i work at the center of reporting and we've done fabulous work on v.a. problems.

page. if we're not under the same roof that's a bit of a challenge at times. >> when nate was little, he spends one night a week right now with david. is your ultimate goal to have the time split 50/50? >> i think that's going to evolve over time. as nate gets older, we will see what's best for him as far as where he's going to school and what have you. the time he spends with david will definitely increase over time. i don't know if it will be 50/50. we have to decide what is in nate's best interest. >> you've known each other 20 years. you've sorted out a lot of the nuts and bolts, legal, finances and custody. there's so much in parenting that's truly unpredictable. >> that's right. >> do you worry about that at all? >> if i worried, it would shut me down. and i always think about the best interests of my son. and we know as a couple, as a de facto couple that things are going to change along the way. we have to be open to that. >> you mentioned the best trst child. you heard the criticism. this most approximates, i guess,

a friendly divorce situation. is it good for a child to be shuttling through both households? >> i think if that's all that child knows, then it becomes normal. it becomes okay. and as long as you provide the love and care and support that that child needs, whether you're in one household or two, it works. >> let me turn to you, darren. have you had a huge response to your website? >> absolutely. i founded family by design as a new parenting option for millions of adults in their 30s and 40s who are single, childless and still want to become parents. we all know someone like that our lives. think of liz lemon from "30 rock," for example. we educate people about what are parenting partnerships and walk them through a process. we actually connect people with our matching technology and we have experts and people in these types of relationships on the site to answer their questions and give them more information.

>> there was a family advocacy group spokesperson quoted in the times, it's a terrible idea, con signing a child to be raised in two different worlds with parents who did not even attempt to form a loving bond with one another. would you agree that in the best circumstances, a child should be raised in a home where the family -- in the traditional nuclear family? >> i think tradition -- i come from the traditional relationship. and i think, of course, that's a wonderful way to have a family. listen, we all know someone who is that person, right? we know someone who is that single person who just has wonderful love and care and would make such a great parent. and if you can connect two people of that same mind-set together and get them talking about the issues around parenting and take the time to build that relationship before they go down that path, that's going to be a really lucky child. >> i was going to say, it's a little bit like a dating website, plus more. how long do you recommend couples talk about this before they take this on? >> i'm also writing a book on

parenting partnerships. i've interviewed dozens of couples in this type of relationship to understand what are the issues. there are three things it comes down to. first you have to take the time to get to know the person and build a real bond of friendship. that does take time. it does not happen overnight. number two, you have to like talk through all the issues around parenting and write it down. what are your feelings about what you need to cover. and to your point, once you have a child, things change and you have to build in the flexibility and strength in the relationship. >> very quickly, heidi and david, any advice? >> know what you're getting into. it's not dating. we're creating -- the stakes are very, very high. we're creating a life and we have a son together. >> and know what you want as well. from the female half of the partnership, if it is a male/female couple, if you will, know if you want an involved parent versus just an anonymous donor. >> interesting to get your story and your perspective. thank you so much for being

>> are you tough on the contestants? >> i'm competitive, absolutely. first and foremost, it's not about us, the mentors. it's about my girls. and we do have a life of someone in our hands that's going to win a big contract. and it's important that this is done properly. and that they really do get the auth au authenticity. >> i was surprised you would do reality television only because for the last ten years a lot of your life has resembled reality television. >> i know. >> why do you want to be out there like this? >> because it's not a camera following me and my life. i would never display my life and what i do and where i travel and where i live. i need to keep that anonymity for me. when i was called and asked about this show, to share what i've been doing for 28 years,

which will be in april. i thought this is something different other than just following me around for no reason. so i'm happy to share what i've learned in this business. there isn't a model handbook to guide. so, this has somewhat taken that form. >> discovered at the age of 15rks still in demand in the business. how has that happened? is it as much about beauty as it is about attitude these days? >> i think you have to have both. now you have to go and do in-store signings, meet with the consumers. you have to be much more personable than before when i started. you could just be the face. >> was that hard for you in the beginning, when they asked you to start doing those things? >> yeah. i got to start that kind of thing slowly, slowly in europe and then, you know, building up around the world. and it's like, making personal appearances. yes, it was. you have to pick it up very quickly. just like i had to pick doing this show up very quickly.

approving permits for the store. tonight's meeting starts at 7:00 at los gatos town hall. two people are expected to survive after crashing their car down a south bay ravine. firefighters were called to the scene yesterday around the:00 on mount hamilton road a mile east of where it meets clayton road. the victim's car fell 150 feet below the road. one person had minor injuries and that person was able to get out of the wreck. but the other person suffered significant injuries and remained trapped. it took rescue crews several hours to reach them and bring them up the hillside. we'll check that forecast and also the roads after the break.

>> did you really? >> i really did. i spent a lot of time alone in my room in our little house in a cul-de-sac and growing up and being a fabulous character like i saw on tv on "sex and the city." >> in many ways you grew up to become that person. you moved to new york city, got the job, went to the glamorous parties. did the reality live up to what your dream had been? >> in some ways it really did. i got here. it was a glamorous, fabulous exciting life although i was way too poor to afford the shoes that carrie bradshaw wore. as i spent a few years going to these parties and writing about fashion and media, it occurred to me that it was unfulfilling in some pretty big ways. >> now things get interesting. you break up with your boyfriend. >> everything kind of crashed in on my head at the same time, which seemed to me in that moment the worst thing that had ever happened to anyone ever.

i've now realized it happens to absolutely everybody at some point in their 20s. >> and craigslist actually brought you together and changed your life with this guy we're calling him cosmo. a russian orthodox rabbi, who practices jujitsu. >> electric bass, listening to punk rock and, without question, the funniest human being i've ever met. >> you room in, become roommates. you didn't date. >> no. >> what did you learn from him? >> cosmo called this our cultural exchange. i would take him to movie premieres and parties in manhattan and he would take me to dinners and introduce me to other members of this ultra orthodox, very traditional, religious community. it was kind of an odd couple story of our time together. i really -- i went into this community having a lot of, i would say, misconceptions and prejudices about what their lives were like. i'm not proud of it, but it's true. in getting to meet especially the women in the ultra orthodox

community, i was totally blown away. these are beautiful, thoughtful, intelligent, kind, warm women who were my age and had three, four, five kids and were, in many cases, very happy. >> did cosmo and that community then change your idea of what the dream was? did it become less about the carrie bradshaw life because of cosmo? >> there are still a lot of perks to the carrie bradshaw life. it opened my eyes to an idea of community and family as being the center of your world. spending less time thinking about fancy things and glamorous parties and a little more time thinking about the people around me and my family is what matters most. >> cosmo has read the book? >> he has. >> what does he think? >> i don't want to give away too ch about cosmo. he has had a pretty remarkable transformation that you get sort of at the end but he had lots of notes and opinions along the way. one of his thoughts, which i perhaps stupidly followed was he encouraged me to put my actual e-mail in the book in case there
